P003 → Avian Sanctuary

duration: 4 weeks April 2025

Project mission: Create an “avian sanctuary” based around the needs, wants, and envornment of Arizonas state bird, the Cactus Wren.

A cactus wren and its nest. They often build in between arms of cacti for protection, 3-10 feet off the ground and 1-2 inch entrance holes.

Sketching process. Highly inspired by found ruins and architechture located near the sonoran desert. Focused on repeating beams, breathable cloth, and room for natural air flow.

Low fidelity mockups, created to visualize core sketch elements in a 3d space.

From these mockups came the “WEDGE” - inspired by how the Cactus Wren builds its nests between the arms of cacti, the wedge design builds towards a sharp edge that is fit to stay snug (similar to the cactus wren). Use of wooden lattices & windows allow for airflow in the hot sonoran desert.

High fidelity mockups, made out of wood and created to understand what changes need to be made to perfect the final direction of the avian sanctuary.

Production - built at DAAP’s build lab, band saws, table saws, and heavy sanding was used for the final product.
